THE OXFORD TROBADORS are back with yet another fusion concert.
This concert is the outcome of a fabulous discovery during the pandemic lockdown. The music of the medieval troubadours and their modern heritage in the South of France melds extraordinarily well with the Bengali Baul Folk music tradition. Very similar troubadour traditions must have existed for centuries in both East and West. The songs will be performed by both groups exchanging their interpretations of love, nature, passion in a seamless fusion. The rhythms, medieval modes, and even the lyrics have so much in common.
Who knows who transmitted these traditions both ways along the Silk Road? Could the Sufi’s of Persia like Rumi have done so? Such vast journeys were made between East and West in medieval times. We also know that the Occitan Trobadors owed much to the Arabic and Jewish influences on their music.
The programme will feature some of the best of the songs that have thrilled audiences at previous OXFORD TROBADORS concerts, performed together with the very best of performers of Baul Bengali music from all over the UK.
Your Comperes will be HE Anwar Choudhury, Former British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, expert on the Baul music tradition, and Professor Denis Noble CBE, leader of the OXFORD TROBADORS and frequent broadcaster in Occitan and French on French media. The event will be a great family outing. We guarantee that your children will be singing along to our famous choruses!
This is a unique show, brought to the Sheldonian Theatre by CoBBC (Celebration of British Bangladeshi Culture) and THE OXFORD TROBADORS.
