Sarah Frances Jenkins The Holloway
Edward Elgar Cello Concerto, Op. 85
Ralph Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 2, 'A London Symphony'
Finn Anderson-Hendra cello
Robert Max conductor
This concert begins with a premiere of a new work, The Holloway, especially composed for us by Sarah Frances Jenkins. This beautiful piece evokes an ancient track worn down by the passage of time and people.
Finn Anderson-Hendra then performs Elgar's popular Cello Concerto, composed during 1919 in the aftermath of the Great War. This is a concerto reflecting sadness and contemplation, with a thoughtful first movement, a brisk scherzo and a meditative requiem, followed by the final movement which brings more motion, purpose, and optimism.
In contrast, Vaughan Williams' second symphony, 'A London Symphony', was written before the Great War, and it evokes different scenes and moods from around London at that time, including Bloomsbury Square, Westminster Embankment with sounds of the busy London rush hour, the chimes of Big Ben, and London at night.
