Celebrating 'LGBT+ History Month 2020'
The Sheldonian Theatre cupola dons a splash of rainbow colours as February marks a month-long observation of LGBT+ History
LGBT+ community members and allies fly the flag worldwide to symbolise pride.
Created by Gilbert Baker, designer and political activist, rainbow flags were first used in 1978 at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Gilbert’s legacy lives on.
In honour of LGBT+ History month, your view of Oxford’s iconic skyline from the Sheldonian’s cupola will be complemented with a splash of rainbow colours on three window panes of the cupola. By day, you will see parts of Oxford through rainbow-tinted glass and we invite you to play with the covered and uncovered cityscapes and share your images with us on our Instagram account. At night, look up to the shining beacon lighting the way in the February night.
The Sheldonian Theatre will also be hosting the LGBT+ History Month keynote lecture by the renowned and award-winning poet, playwright and performer, Louise Wallwein MBE on Wednesday 12 February. This is a free event and all are welcome.
